SEO vs AEO vs GEO: Generative Engine Optimization and AEO, Explained

Three names for getting found. One is about Google's blue links, one is about direct answers, and one is about being named by AI. Here is what each means and why you probably need all three.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: Generative Engine Optimization and AEO, Explained

If you have searched for help with marketing lately, you have seen three sets of letters: SEO, AEO and GEO, short for search, answer and generative engine optimization. Agencies throw them around like everyone already knows the difference. Most people don't, and that is fine. Here is the short version.

  • SEO (search engine optimization) gets your pages ranked in Google's normal results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your page picked as the direct answer to a question.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business named inside answers that AI writes.

They overlap a lot. But each one asks a slightly different question about your website, so it helps to look at them one at a time.

What is SEO?

SEO is the work of getting your pages to rank when someone searches on Google or Bing. It covers three things: the words on the page match what people search, the site is technically easy for search engines to crawl, and other sites trust you enough to link to you.

Google publishes its own rules for this in its SEO Starter Guide. None of it is secret. The hard part is doing all of it, on every page, every month, without skipping the boring bits.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization is about being the answer, not just a result. When Google shows a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, or when a voice assistant reads one answer aloud, it has picked one page to quote. AEO is the work of making your page the easy pick.

In practice that means:

  • Headings written as the real questions people type
  • A clear, short answer right under each question, then the detail
  • FAQ and other structured data, so machines know which text is the answer
  • Facts, dates and sources, because engines quote facts, not adjectives

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization is the newest of the three. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews "who does X near me" or "what is the best tool for Y", the AI writes an answer and often names a few businesses. GEO is the work of being one of the names.

AI tools build those answers from pages they can read and trust. So GEO leans on a few extra things:

  • Access. AI crawlers have to be allowed in. A surprising number of sites block them by accident in their robots file.
  • One clear entity. Your structured data should describe one business, with one name, one set of services and one set of pages, all linked together. Many sites send five loose pieces of data that never connect.
  • Plain-language files. Files like llms.txt give AI tools a clean summary of who you are and what you sell.
  • Being cited elsewhere. AI answers lean on what other trusted sites say about you.

Which one does your business need?

Honestly, all three, and in that order. SEO is the floor. A page that search engines can't crawl or don't trust will not be quoted as an answer, and it will rarely be named by AI. AEO comes next, because the same question-and-answer structure that wins snippets also makes your page easy for AI to read. GEO sits on top.

The good news is that SEO, answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization are one body of work, not three bills. If a provider quotes you three separate packages for SEO, AEO and GEO, ask which tasks are actually different.

We do all three in one package. Our people use AI systems to run more than sixty on-page checks and seventeen answer engine checks on every page, every month.

How to check where you stand today

  1. Search your own services. Google the main thing you sell plus your city. Note where you appear.
  2. Ask the AI tools. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity who they recommend for what you do. Note whether you are named.
  3. Look at your robots file. Visit yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for lines that block GPTBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot.
  4. Look for question headings. Open your main service page. Does any heading match a question a customer actually asks?

If the answers are "not on page one", "not named", "blocked" and "no", you are not alone. That is where most small business sites start.

Common questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO gets a page ranked in Google's normal results. GEO, generative engine optimization, gets a business named inside answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews.

What is AEO vs SEO?

AEO, answer engine optimization, is about being chosen as the direct answer: featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants. SEO is the wider job of ranking pages. Good AEO is built on top of good SEO.

Will AEO or GEO replace SEO?

No. AI tools still lean on pages that search engines can crawl, trust and understand. A site that is weak at SEO rarely shows up well in AI answers.
